Foundation of Fraunhofer COMEDD as new research institution of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft

Dresden, 2nd July 2012; On 1st July 2012 a new Fraunhofer Research Institution, the Fraunhofer COMEDD, was founded. The former department COMEDD (Center for Organic Materials and Electronic Devices Dresden) of the Fraunhofer IPMS has now reached the pre-stage to an independent institute of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft (the largest European society for applied research and development).

Prof. Karl Leo, director of the new Fraunhofer COMEDD, feels very confident that this foundation makes a further concentration and a more effective work on organic light-emitting diodes and solar cells possible:

„This foundation shows the excellent acceptance in the field of organic electronic which we have obtained during the last years. Fraunhofer COMEDD is a central part of Europe´s leading cluster for organic electronic, Organic Electronics Saxony (OES), with more than 1.000 employees. The foundation is an important milestone to move forward in research and development in the field of organic electronics. For instance we see a large demand for OLED microdisplays at the moment pointing out a new world of applications. Additionally the new institution opens new perspectives for a strategic development of new business fields, which we are preparing now intensely.“

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) as area lighting elements and organic solar cells as mobile energy source will be soon popular in everyday life. OLEDs integrated in microchips as microdisplays for interactive data eye-glasses and sensor solutions can revolutionize the world of opto electronic.

About Fraunhofer COMEDD:

Fraunhofer COMEDD was founded as an independent research institution of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in order to transfer the results of research and development in the field of organic materials and systems to production. The institution combines research and development works for the production, integration and technology of organic devices. The focus of Fraunhofer COMEDD lies in customer- and application orientated research, development and pilot fabrication of novel module concepts and fabrication methods for these organic materials. Fraunhofer COMEDD is an European-wide leading production-related research and development center for organic semiconductors focusing on organic light-emitting diodes and vacuum technology.   The Fraunhofer COMEDD clean room consists of the following equipment:

  • a pilot line for the fabrication of OLEDs on 370 x 470 mm² substrates,
  • two pilot lines for 200 mm wafer for the OLED integration on silicon substrates as well as
  • a research line for the roll-to-roll fabrication on flexible substrates.
Fraunhofer COMEDD offers a wide range of research, development and pilot production possibilities, especially for OLED lighting, organic solar cells and OLED microdisplays.
