Interactive OLED-data-eye-glasses win the “Best in Show” award at the 50th
anniversary of the worldwide leading display conference SID 2012 in Boston/USA
Dresden, 13 June 2012; At the 50th anniversary of the worldwide leading
display conference SID 2012 in Boston/USA COMEDD´s data-eye-glasses
based on bidirectional OLED microdisplays won the “Best in Show” award
on 6th of June, 2012. Once a year at the display conference of the
Society for Information Display (SID), this award goes to unique and
innovative display applications. COMEDD (Center for Organic Materials
and Electronic Devices Dresden) at the Fraunhofer IPMS received the
award with its OLED based interactive binocular data-eye-glasses.
The
glasses enable the user on the one hand to have a view on the real
world and on the other hand to display further virtual information. The
embedded camera of the microdisplay captures the eye movements of the
user so that the user can control and interact with the virtual shown
information, similar to a computer mouse. Besides COMEDD the development
team included Fraunhofer IOSB being responsible for the eye-tracking
and Trivisio Prototyping GmbH for the optics design.
“I am
really happy about the award, which recognizes the development of the
OLED microdisplays up to complete data-eye-glasses. The top five of 175
nominated exhibits received an award. So we rank with such renowned
companies as Samsung, LG, Dimenco and Ocular LCD!”, states Dr. Rigo Herold, system designer of the awarded data-eye-glasses.
Data-eye-glasses
are used in a broad range of different applications e. g. medical
applications or to support hand-free assembly work – they are useful for
all hand-free applications where additional information are needed. For
the evaluation of the technology and the development of customized
products COMEDD offers evaluation kits.

About COMEDD:
In
recent years Dresden has evolved into a research center for organic
materials and systems. In order to transfer the results to production
further improvements in the production process and the establishment as
well as the testing of first pilot-production lines are necessary. The
Center of Organic Materials and Electronic Devices Dresden (COMEDD) –
meanwhile an independent branch of Fraunhofer IPMS - combines research
and development works for the production, integration and technology of
organic devices. The focus of COMEDD lies in customer- and application
orientated research, development and pilot fabrication of novel module
concepts and fabrication methods for these organic materials. COMEDD is a
European-wide leading production-related research and development
center for organic semiconductors focusing on organic light-emitting
diodes and vacuum technology.
The COMEDD clean room consists of the following equipment: - a pilot line for the fabrication of OLEDs on 370 x 470 mm² substrates,
- two pilot lines for 200 mm wafer for the OLED integration on CMOS substrates as well as
- a research line for the roll-to-roll fabrication on flexible substrates.
COMEDD
offers a wide range of research, development and pilot production
possibilities, especially for OLED lighting, organic solar cells and
OLED microdisplays. Thanks to our partners Fraunhofer IOSB and Trivisio!
